Quick and Statty

by Alex

Jon Hollinger wrote of the Cavaliers-Bulls-Sonics mega-trade:
Answer me this: Would you rather have Hughes (12.0 player efficiency rating) or Szczerbiak (16.0)? Brown (8.5) or West (10.1)? Marshall (8.5) or Wallace (12.1)? Gooden (12.8) or Smith (17.4)?
What if the trade had been during last summer, rather than at the trading deadline? Hollinger would've used PERs from last season. So, answer me this: Would you rather have Hughes (12.1) or Szczerbiak (14.8)? Brown (7.5) or West (14.0)? Marshall (15.3) or Wallace (14.6)? Gooden (16.5) or Smith (13.9)? It's a lot closer this time. The Cavaliers still come out ahead, I think.

Hollinger's PER is a nice stat. Though adjusted plus-minus (from BasketballValue.com) is a little more nuanced and has the word "adjusted" in it. Here is a brief explanation from 82games. Using this new stat from this season, answer me this: Would you rather have Hughes (-14.09) or Szczerbiak (4.86)? Brown (N/A) or West (-11.49)? Marshall (N/A) or Wallace (-.52)? Gooden (1.97) or Smith (2.17)? It's not as clear-cut anymore. Obviously, Hughes was killing the Cavs. But other than getting rid of him, it's a wash.

It was nice to see the Cavs dominate last night -- although against the lowly Grizz -- something we don't see often enough. Here's to the future.

sup guys, I know this is totally unrelated..... I was trying to find out how much cap space the browns have this offseason. Free agency begins this weekend...how much spending money do we have? Are we targeting anyone?

This was not a wash. The Cavs were never going to be better than they were last year with the team as constructed. Hughes or Sczerbiak isn't the right comp... I'd go with Marshall vs. Szczerbiak. The role on the team is spot up shooter for 20-30 minutes off the bench: I'd take Wally.

Brown or West? I don't know, a guy that didn't play vs. the first real point guard on the team since Brevin Knight? I think its better to look at it West vs. Hughes- they are playing about the same role for the Cavs and Hughes just was unhappy and terrible in that role. West, on the other hand, may have a bad plus-minus, but he was on a terrible team, and a point guard on a terrible team is going to have a hard time putting any sort of numbers. This is besides the fact that he wasn't playing enough minutes for these stats to have too much meaning.

Gooden and Smith seam to be a wash. Gooden is better than Smith at rebounding, but Smith seems to be the more consistent scorer, I'd probably rather have Gooden, but Smith makes his loss tolerable.

Wallace- he seems to be the gravy. His contract is why he was necessary to the deal- to match up with Hughes', but I'm very intrigued by his defense and rebounding. He seems like an extra Anderson Varejao. This gives extreme depth to our 4/5 positions and allows Z some more rest. We gave up Newble (who we can re-sign after 30 days, he was cut by the Sonics), Brown, and Simmons for him? yes please. Wallace is an embarrassment at the free throw line, but you cannot watch the last few games and tell me that you think he doesn't make the Cavs much better defensively.
